Newborn Session from the Home | Bolton Photographer

We’re almost 12 month in business at Tilly White (see upcoming blog) and feel pretty settled in our gorgeous studio!! Many of you reading this blog will not know how much of a home bird I am. Once I settle into something or somewhere, there is no budging me. So to ask myself to work away from my little happy place (the studio) is like asking me to move to another country.

This year I’ve set myself the challenge to “push myself out of my comfort zone”. When you work for yourself you have no big boss to tell you what to do or make you do things you aren’t comfortable with, but everybody needs a challenge to feel a sense of accomplishment.

So my first challenge of the year was to offer a session to a new family, in the comfort of their own home.

I approached an absolute gem of a lady who had recently given birth to her little girl Ivy. Mum had a c-section and had said she was looking around for a photographer that offered location/home newborn sessions. There seemed to be a gap in the market and she was unable to find one locally. So, of course the both of us jumped at the opportunity.

I started to ask myself the following: how will I travel my whole studio in my little car, will there be enough room, what will my lighting be like, what will I do with background furniture…..Pre shoot I made a list of the absolute essentials I would need for a newborn session;

- Camera
- Beanbag
- Blankets

….that was it. Granted I packed whatever else I could in the car. But I realised, this was so doable.

I’d planned to use natural light, however it was a miserable day and the house was a cottage with small windows. So I did end up taking my studio lighting with me too.

Upon my arrival, I was welcome by mum and baby, so relaxed and at ease. Between us we decided that the bedroom was going to be the best place for our base.
We spent 3 hours in there  Mum was at ease, Ivy was chilled, and I was having a lovely time drinking my brews as I went along! Mum was able to change outfits as she went, feed Ivy in her usual feeding spots and sit back and relax in bed.

I had in my head that I wanted to take a few lifestyle images to really embrace that we were in their home. I took some of mum and Ivy relaxing on the bed, and some of Ivy in her very own cot. These images were so personal to their family and I can honestly say it was my absolute pleasure to witness and photograph such a lush family in their beautiful home (that dad had built from scratch may I add).

Granted, I love the studio experience we offer to families, and the fact new parents can come into the studio, hand over their baby to a professional and relax for a couple of hours. However, there was just something incredibly personal and special about this home session! And especially perfect for those mums who are just really struggling to leave the house.

We will soon be offering Home Newborn Sessions as a service so watch out!!!! In the meantime, if you like the sound of our new package, just drop us a message for more details!!

Below are some of the images taken in Ivy’s session…
